Review of “1.1” on Bleep

Review appeared on Bleep here – 10th September 2021

“Few come as mysterious as Cult 48. The tantalising anonymity of these creators has caused countless conspiracy theories to start buzzing about the internet. Nothing is iron-clad, but then again, Cult 48 seem to exist in another realm beyond materiality. Welcome to the shimmering brilliance of 1.1, a record of soundscapes descended from a distant universe.

Their world is one where genre tags never factor into the sheer impact of their music. The measured pace of ‘Counter Dream’ feels like a count down in synth form, gentle arps and flighty leads running the numbers down to the fiery blast-off of ‘Thunder My Companion’, a track as indebted to plunderphonic crate-digging as it is to the mammoth, bassy sway of dubstep. Moments of calm shine through on the psychedelic ‘The Day The Clouds Collapsed’, and later break through the fractured beat of ‘Spider’s Web in the Rain’ and ‘Gullbatross’, the latter of which brings 1.1 full circle to the tentative arps where we started.

1.1 is a fantastical journey across a vivid electronic cosmos, and any traveller may just glimpse eternity when they travel alongside Cult 48.”
